Svensk dødsudrensningsdebut
Heretic Legion er et forholdsvist nyt svensk death metal-band, og denne udgivelse er deres debutalbum. De har været sammen siden 2012, men det er først her i 2018, at de har fået sig en kontrakt med et pladeselskab og fået udgivet dette album. Når det gælder dødsmetal af god kvalitet, så plejer Sverige at være dygtige til at vide hvordan en kvalitetsskive skal skæres, og dette er heller ikke en undtagelse.
Genre-forvirring
Bandet består af tidligere medlemmer fra det melodiske heavy-band Nocturnal, samt de to thrash metal-bands Massdistraction og Damned by God, og jeg synes, at man kan ane elementer fra de to genrer i deres musik. Heretic Legion har afgjort også lidt core-elementer hist og her, men det er svært at bestemme, om det er deathcore eller metalcore – det vil jeg lade være helt op til den enkelte lytter at bedømme. Det er ikke nødvendigvis dårligt, at de er så blandede i deres stil, men det gør det svært helt at vurdere deres potentiale, når de endnu ikke helt har fundet sig selv.
Et tydeligt eksempel på blandingen af thrash og death metal er nummeret ”Bloodbringer” med de klassiske thrash-skrig og de mørke dybe basrytmer suppleret med en ond growlen, som jo er kendetegnende for svensk dødsmetal.
Hvad bringer fremtiden?
Desværre synes jeg, at selve albummet som en helhed er ret ensformigt, og det er svært at skelne den ene melodi fra den anden. Et enkelt nummer, som dog skiller sig ud og er med til at hive skiven op i karakter, er helt klart ”Ressurection” – et nummer, som har producer Johan Palm med på vokalen. Nummeret minder mig i stilen en hel del om Hypocrisy, og det er bestemt et kvalitetsstempel herfra. Heretic Legion er absolut et band med potentiale, og albummet sniger sig da også lige op over middel i karakter, takket være især sidstnævnte nummer, alene af den grund at det er så velspillet melodisk death metal, som man overhovedet kunne ønske sig. Jeg ser frem til fremtidige udgivelser fra bandet, så jeg kan følge med i deres udvikling mod at finde sig selv og deres egen lyd og stil.
