Som vågnet fra sin dvale
Vi skal over to årtier tilbage, til 1997 for at være helt nøjagtig, for at finde Above Ravens’ rødder. Oprindeligt startede det som et sideprojekt til bandet Rimfrost, med visionen om, at bringe elementer fra folk- og krigsmetal sammen med black metal-genren. Projektet blev dog ret hurtigt stedt til hvile, lige indtil 2015, hvor medlemmerne fik tiden og mulighederne for at prøve det hele af en gang til. Det har resulteret i en lille håndfuld singler siden 2015. De to seneste, som også skulle være en opvarmning til et kommende fuldt album, er dem vi snakker om i dag.
Råt og stemningsfuldt
Der går desværre ret lang tid imellem de black metal-relaterede udgivelser, som jeg personligt får lyttet til. Jeg bliver dog straks trukket tilbage i den helt rigtige stemning lige fra de første sekunder af “No Glory Today”. En summende guitar, hvis klassiske black metal æstetik kun kan beskrives som en flok vrede hvepse, der langsomt sniger sig ind på lytteren, bryder igennem stilheden, og gør plads til de tordnende trommer som hurtigt slutter sig til. Både guitar- og rytmesektionen på disse to numre skaber en komfortabel base for de kvalte og nærmest pinte vokaler, som der forventes af genren.
Vækker interesse for fremtiden
Det er måske netop dette, som er Above Ravens’ umiddelbart største svaghed. Selvom de gør det rigtig godt, så er det ved første lyt meget svært at finde noget, som skulle få dem til at stikke ud i genren.
Der er dog stadig enkelte elementer, der i samspil skaber en optimistisk nysgerrighed, omkring hvad Above Ravens mon kan opnå på et fuldt album. Her snakker jeg især om den gennemkørende intensitet, som er at finde det meste af spilletiden, som alligevel giver den plads til et mere stemningsfyldt moment på tracket “Mark of the Muspel”. Jeg tænker, at denne sammensmeltning må være resultatet af det vikingeinspirerede krigsmetals møde med den klassiske black metal-lyd, og dét glæder jeg mig til at høre mere af på det kommende album.
